Dr. Gowriharan "Ty" Thaiyananthan is a highly regarded researcher and neurosurgeon who specializes in complex and minimally-invasive spine surgery. He is at the forefront of pioneering new surgical techniques using stem cells and minimally invasive surgery to treat neck and back pain, degenerative disc disease and herniated disc disease, spinal stenosis, and scoliosis.

His passion is giving his patients a higher quality of life through the best spine treatment possible. Dr. Ty states, “There is no more gratifying event then to have a patient say that I made their life better. That is what I strive to do with each of my patients.”

Dr. Thaiyananthan has written numerous peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and abstracts. He is an active member of several prestigious medical associations including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons and North American Society of Spine Surgery, Orange County Medical Association, Indian Medical Association. Dr. Ty explains, “By virtue of being a spine surgeon, I owe it to my patients to remain on the cutting edge of medicine. Belonging to these medical societies allows me to get the latest information to better treat my patients."

Dr. Gowriharan Thaiyananthan grew up in Oklahoma before he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering and Bachelor of Arts degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from The Johns Hopkins University. After earning his medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco, Dr. Ty completed his general surgery internship and neurosurgery residency at Yale New Haven Hospital where he was also named Chief Resident of Neurological Surgery. Dr. Ty completed his minimally-invasive and complex spine surgery fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center’s Institute for Spinal Disorders.

After completing his combined neurosurgery/orthopedic fellowship at Cedars-Sinai he accepted a position as chief of neurosurgical spine surgery at The University of California, Irvine Medical Center. He remained with UCI for nearly two years before he decided to make the jump to private practice in order to provide his patients with a more personalized style of care. Dr. Ty states, “My goal with starting BASIC was to create a clinic that was easy to access, that was welcoming, that offered the most advanced therapies possible without overwhelming patients. Our therapies define the state of spine care and what we do at times can be complex, but our principles and approach to patient care has and will always be basic." Dr. Thaiyananthan is a recipient of the 2012 Patient's Choice Award. He is also Medical Director for Chapman Medical Center's Blue Distinction Center of Excellence.
